ORBIS - Saving Sight in Indonesia


The Problem

  • More than two million people in Indonesia are blind.
  • The leading cause of blindness among adults is cataract.

  • The Indonesian Ministry of Health estimates that 5.7% of the population suffer from diabetes. Diabetes can affect sight and if left untreated can cause blindness (Diabetic Retinopathy).
  • 60% of the cases of blindness in children are preventable, but there is a shortage of eye care doctors according to the Ministry of Health.

The Second Flying Eye Hospital Programme of the year

The ORBIS Flying Eye Hospital will visit Indonesia in 2012 to deliver:

  • Sight-saving surgeries to those in need
  • Training to more eye care professionals including: nurses, local eye doctors and other health workers so they can provide better eye care services to their communities
  • Public health education

ORBIS and Indonesia – a 30 year partnership

ORBIS first visited Indonesia in 1982, the inaugural year of the Flying Eye Hospital. Most recently, the hospital with wings conducted a programme in Jakarta and Subaraya in 2010.
