ORBIS - Saving Sight in the Philippines

The Problem

  • More than half a million people in the Philippines are blind.
  • Up to one hundred children lose their sight every week and half of these cases are either treatable or preventable.
Philippines
Capital: Manila
Language: Filipino (Tagalog)
Population: 94,013,200

  • The leading cause of blindness among adults is cataract. Although the treatment is simple and effective it is not accessible for poor people living in rural areas as the eye doctors work mainly in the major cities.

The First Flying Eye Hospital Programme of the year

The ORBIS Flying Eye Hospital will visit the Philippines in 2012 to deliver:

  • Sight-saving surgeries to those in need
  • Training to more eye care professionals including: nurses, local eye doctors and other health workers so they can provide better eye care services to their communities
  • Public health education

ORBIS and the Philippines – a 30 year partnership

ORBIS first visited the Philippines in 1982, the inaugural year of the Flying Eye Hospital. Since then nine more visits have been made to: Manila, Subic, Angeles, Cebu and Davao.

This Flying Eye Hospital visit to Iloilo will be the 11th programme in the Philippines and the first in the Western Visayas Region.
