Francis can see a brighter future thanks to ORBIS

Guadalupe is a small village two hours away from Trujillo in Peru. The journey isn’t easy but for Zoila Zamora there was never any question of taking her 18 months old baby to meet the ORBIS Flying Eye Hospital team on its most recent visit to the region.
Francis Moncada was born with Down’s Syndrome and congenital cataract. He hadn’t received any treatment or surgery and was almost completely blind. |
| His mother knew she had to act quickly but previously didn’t have anywhere to turn. |

Dr Daniel Neely, ORBIS Medical Volunteer and Associate Professor of Ophthalmology, Indiana University School of Medicine, explained: “The tough part is to have excellent visual rehabilitation as the cataract needed to be removed before the child was two months of age. He is one and a half years old and he is likely to have less than normal vision as a result, but drastically better than he was before.”
Dr Neely and his hands-on trainee removed the cataract in Francis’ right eye successfully but described the case as “not typical” because of the advanced level of its condition and compared its cataract with a very tough “white leather”. |

The next day, Dr Nila Calderon the local specialist at the Instituto Regional de Oftalmologia said “Francis was looking at us and following our moves, so it is a very good sign that he will rehabilitate well. Dr Neely was a great doctor- we were very pleased to work with him.”
Francis will have the second operation in a couple of weeks and this will improve the chances of recovering his vision and therefore his independence.
