Temuujin's sight-saving story is thanks to you
|
Temuujin's mother found out about the ORBIS Flying Eye Hospital's visit to Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia and decided to take her one years old boy to the local partner hospital, with the hope that someone could help with his rare form of strabismus (squint).
ORBIS volunteer, Dr Rudy Wagner from the University of Medicine & Dentistry of New Jersey, described Temuujin's squint as the worst he’d ever seen. “Without treatment, he would have lost the ability to see with both eyes simultaneously.”
Temuujin was operated on by Dr Wagner who was assisted by a local ophthalmologist. He explained each step of the procedure which was also streamed live to the classroom, located at the front of the Flying Eye Hospital, where 40 local eye care professionals observed it.
In the Operating Theatre, there were also trainee anaesthetists and nurses observing the operation, which was complex due to the rare condition and took over an hour. However, it was a huge success and Temuujin was soon back in his mothers arms in the recovery room. |
|
The day after the operation, Temuujin returned to the plane for a check up. As Dr Wagner removed the bandage, the difference was clearly visible, his eye was properly aligned. The doctor was extremely pleased with the way the operation went, and explained that whilst it would take him a while to fully recover, he could already see well. Temuujin’s mother was so grateful to ORBIS for giving his son the gift of sight, and we are grateful to you for helping us do so. |
