In 2006 the international publishing and events company Euromoney Institutional Investor decided to streamline its charitable activities and focus on supporting one cause that all staff could rally behind.
After considering a number of charities it chose ORBIS. The company felt that as an international publisher, it wanted to support an organisation that enabled people in the developing world to see, and therefore, to read.
Euromoney pledged to support a project in one of the poorest states in India, Orissa, on the northeastern coast. The project at Kalinga Eye Hospital aims to introduce children’s eye care services to the region, which has a population of over 36 million. Euromoney support will enable ORBIS to recruit and train a paediatric eye care team, develop and equip a child-friendly operating theatre, and reach out to poor rural communities that had never before had access to any kind of eye care.
The project also aims to dramatically increase the number of cataract patients served by the hospital. Currently the hospital can only help 25 percent of those in need.
In 2007, staff across all of Euromoney Institutional Investor offices worldwide raised more than £200,000 to support Kalinga Eye Hospital. This fantastic achievement involved all staff pulling together. Fundraising efforts included corporate awards dinners, quiz nights, cake sales and even a mass skydiving event -- with 50 staff members participating! Thanks to Euromoney, thousands of children and adults living in Orissa will have their sight and their hopes for a brighter future restored.
