By leaving a legacy to ORBIS, you can give thousands of people who are blind or at risk of losing their sight their dignity, independence and the opportunity to work their way out of poverty.
Our mission -- to eliminate avoidable blindness by bringing essential knowledge and skills to ophthalmologists, nurses and health care workers in some of the world’s poorest countries -- relies entirely upon the generosity of kind supporters like yourself.
If you have a Will
If you already have a Will but would like to leave a gift to ORBIS, you may do so by making a simple addition (codicil) to your existing will. By adding a codicil, you may include new instructions and delete old ones without having to revoke your entire will.
If you don't have a Will
If you don't have a Will, you may need to see a solicitor. Although you'll have to pay a fee, you'll receive sound professional advice and can rest assured that your wishes are followed.
Types of gifts
The most common types of gifts include:
- Residuary bequest: A gift of the remainder of the estate after all other bequests have been made and debts cleared.
- Pecuniary bequest: A gift of a fixed sum of money. The value of pecuniary legacies decreases over time as the cost of living increases.
Suggested wording
To make things simple, we have included an example of the wording your solicitor may want to use:
- For a residuary bequest (a proportion)
I give (percent) of the residue of my estate absolutely to ORBIS UK (Registered Charity No. 1061352) of Fourth Floor, Fergusson House, 124-128 City Road, London EC1V 2NJ for its general charitable purposes. I direct that the receipt of the Treasurer or other duly authorised officer shall be sufficient discharge to my executors.
- For a pecuniary bequest (a set sum)
I give the following legacy free of tax to ORBIS
UK (Registered Charity No. 1061352) of Fourth Floor, Fergusson House, 124-128 City Road, London EC1V 2NJ for its general charitable purposes the sum of £_____. I direct that the receipt of the Treasurer or other duly authorised officer shall be sufficient discharge to my executors.
